Why is in every single "PvE survival" talent build Aimed shot talent?... Aimed Shot is definitely not PvE skill

Anonymous said...

U'd need it in TOC... At faction champions :)

Is it worth to take this talent only for fraction champions? I don't think so :P

As MM hunter you will need it,if you'r 100%arp and this does physical damage.

Necro-post... but as I found this while searching hunter builds for a private server, I'm assuming someone else is as well, so I thought I'd still pitch in my 2 cents, especially to the "Aimed Shot is a PvP" talent idea.

As someone mentioned above, Aimed Shot is a physical damage dealer. Hunters, once over like, 800 armor pen or more, will start doing way more dps from ArPen then from Agil, and you can start converting the agil gems to ArPen. But not UNTIL then. I forget the "cutoff" number, but it's a high ArPen (usually iLvL gear of 264 or higher is most every slot).

Arcane Shot gets replaced at about 400 ArPen (passive) as a Steady Shot will do more damage than an Arcane.
When ArPen gets even higher, near 100%, Aimed Shot does more than Steady Shot, since it's an instant, GCD ability, not a cast time.

In Survival, we have enough abilities (and Lock and Load) to nearly nullify the need to use a steady shot (and the glyph), especially as we pick up Aimed Shot. Now I'm only talking high gear levels. Entry level iLvL 200 - forget about it. Arcane and Steady will be your best friends until ICC level stuff.

The biggest problem with these guides is that they rarely distinguish what GEAR level this is appropriate for - or rather, the end user sees it and says "I'm rolling this with my fresh 80 blue gear." Gear score isn't sufficient, as you can have a high gear score but improper stat stacking, and still suffer a specific talent spec due to not having enough crit/agil/arpen/etc.

From my experience, both in retail and in private server experience, that hunters are one of the most complex and misunderstood classes in WoW (at least during Wrath). Several devs had commented about their desire to get the hunter "right" and get each spec to excel, but they were left with BM being not-viable for end-game raiding, with no intent to change it (and they didn't) until Cata.

However, here's my analysis for anyone seeking to play Wotlk private server and looking for help.
Leveling up, Beast Mastery is by and far the easiest and quickest spec to use, as your pet, like a wolf or devilsaur, will be almost half or more of your dps, and will survive crap like a tank, with your mend pet offering decent survivability (and bandages), with very little down-time, as you can send pet in with Mark on target and Autoshot with a few Arcane shot until target is dead.

At 80, Beast Mastery remains the spec to use in entry dungeon grinding, as the pet will remain a decent dps monster.
The switch to Survival or MM should only happen as the gear improves. What level? Depends, really. There used to be an amazing spreadsheet that would analyze your own gear and let you know how much each spec/talent would help you. That's been updated to recent game versions and I can't find a timewalking or archived version anywhere.
My opinion is once you have iLvL 213 or higher in most every slot (with appropriate agility gear) you can switch to SURVIVAL, as it is actually more dps than MM yet.
Up till iLvL 245 or higher in every slot, Survival should do more.
Marskman really shines at super high gear levels. And even then, Survival can and will do more dps on certain encounters.

But, keep in mind, certain talents in every spec will be better for certain gear levels then others. Aimed Shot should not be taken in Survival specs until ArPen is ridiculously high. Arcane shot should be used in the "rotation" in any spec until passive ArPen exceeds 400 or more, then replace it with a Steady Shot (or Aimed, if in Marskman spec anyway).

But, the bottom like I've always discovered: players will pull more dps when they're playing a spec they ENJOY and are actually good at doing.

Hope this helps in any way!
